Last week, I wrote about how to know what's true when you listen to spiritual teachers or AI videos or other sources of information who present their ideas with conviction. And I'm still thinking about that question. Stay with me and I'll tell you why. She Said, "You're not Really Helping People!"Over the weekend, I attended the first 3-hour training of a free 3-day workshop that was offering a lengthy paid training that would teach everything in more detail. And the title of this part of my post is not an exact quote, but I felt like her basic message Friday night. What I walked away with was this challenge, said over and over, in similar words to this - "so you've learned this technique or you've got this certification? Well, if this is the thing, why are you and your clients still triggered by your traumas?" And she told us, the healers, the coaches, the practitioners, what we needed to master for ourselves before ever working with future clients and offered her own training, which would focus on us first, and then show us how to finally help others. Now, I will return to this experience in a future post, but I got me thinking about the authority we hand over to experts and gatekeepers who suggest that only they know what we really need. I've Been Doing this for YearsAbout 20 years ago, I read a wonderful book that had a quiz in it. I love quizzes! And it was about finding your primary element and then using that as a guide for decorating your home. And she had a training I couldn't afford that would give you the ability to help others decorate spiritually, using the elements. I mourned the loss of that possibility, used what I learned from the book in my own home and moved on. At the time I had my own healing practice, working with clients at a distance, teaching them a self-healing technique that had changed my life and others. But I was forever trying other healing techniques just because they appealed to me. So, she shrugs, I created my own elemental healing practice, just for myself, but occasionally would use it with clients, too, when they hired me to do distant healing. But I would never have dared to market this healing technique. Why? Because I made it up. No one had trained me. I didn't have a certification. So it didn't feel legitimate. There wasn't an expert telling me I was allowed to do it. Recently, I learned about a new elemental system and immediately wanted to learn it! And she offers training for facilitators. But I can't afford it. So twenty years later, here I am again, catching myself in the act. Not trusting what I learned on my own. Wishing I could afford a credential that would make me feel legitimate. Learning from someone deepens our knowing. But does it also teach us to distrust what we know until someone else validates it? Here's What's ComingI want to look at the places where we hand over our own knowing. To experts. Healers. Teachers. Spiritual leaders. Charts. Quizzes. Books. And yes, sometimes ChatGPT. We ask them to tell us what’s happening in our bodies. What we need to heal. Which path to take. Which essential oil to use. What our symptoms mean. Who we are. Over the next few weeks, I want to explore what can happen when we stop looking outside ourselves for every answer and begin to discover what we already know. Not sure where this is going yet. But I've been waiting twenty years to find out. See you next time! Love, Jeanine

I hope you give yourself more credit for the wisdom and skills you've developed over the years. Learning from others has its place, but I don't think every valuable insight needs someone else's certification to be legitimate. I'm looking forward to seeing where this series takes you.

Thank you, Tamara! My experience on Friday had me thinking that, too, because she seemed pretty determined to make sure we felt the opposite.

Yeah, that elusive magic elixir, right? Yes, we can share our own wisdom. In fact, I'm grateful for the wisdom you shared in your post today!

I believe that when we stop seeking validation and direction from the outside world and start listening to our own internal compass, we become more authentic and we become more resilient, meaning we stop living someone else's version of a successful life and start living our own.

YES! That's so true. We can even end up living a life that's not really ours.

I think there's a place for learning from experts because we don't know everything, but I also think it's easy to start doubting what we've learned through our own experiences especially when someone else comes across that they have the answers. I'll be interested to see where this series takes you.

Right? There's actually a marketing model, I believe, for making people doubt their own wisdom, so they will believe that they need to buy yours.

Sometimes, we place too much trust in people who have titles and who are anointed as the experts and too little trust in our own understanding of our bodies. I think that our lived experiences have so much value. And I do have so much confidence in your advice and your suggestions because your knowledge is based on understanding your own body and your own spirit and your life experiences.

Thank you, Alice! I know what you mean. I have so much love for other healers and coaches and how vulnerable we are to those who suggest that we can only be okay when we've learned what they teach.

So you're saying you figured and learned things yourself that worked but feel the need to have someone "teach" it to be legit? Then you would have a certificate. But way do you need that? You have learned on your own which to me means more than having someone teach you. Your healing to others comes from your heart it some things can't be taught by someone else, it comes from within. For over 50 years we had our interior decorating business and never went to higher education to learn. We couldn't be considered an interior designer but you need a license for that which we were doing everything and more as an interior decorating. We did it from our hearts like you are doing your healing!

Jeanine, what powerful points you raise. There seems to be a big uptick in people offering certifications, which may be a great business model *for them*. It doesn't mean any of us need those certifications. I'm certified by God, by my university degrees, and by the results I get for my coaching and healing clients. Recently, I saw a Stress Management Coach certification for $500. I thought maybe I had better snap it up, so as not to fall behind the new certification craze. Then I realized: my 40 years of specialty training are only worth $500? Nah.
