Morning Moments: Rituals that Feel like Coming Home

Mornings have always been difficult for me. I'm a night owl.

But having a slow morning ritual helps tremendously. Not one I feel obligated to do, but one I know will allow me to wake up slowly, offer me comfort, connect me to myself in a deeper way and ground me as I start the day.

And those moments of connecting to my divine self do feel like coming home. Let's take a look at how you can create that kind of ritual, too.

First Moments: Creating
the Foundation

The key to a morning ritual that truly nurtures you is letting go of the "shoulds." It's going to be your morning ritual and it can be any way you want.

The goal is to honor your natural rhythm and create the feelings you want to experience.

So you can start exactly where you are...

If, like I do, you need to stay in bed for those first few moments, stay there. If you need to move slowly, at first, move slowly.

Sometimes I just sit and stare into space until I start to come to life.

Maybe you need absolute quiet. Or perhaps soft music would be better?

Your morning ritual can begin the moment you first become aware of being awake.

Take three gentle breaths. Feel the weight of your body being supported. And if you're ready, check in with your spirit team, and feel that support, too.

Creating a Cozy Morning Space

Make your space feel like comfort and coziness waiting to hug you.

From your cozy corner or window seat, you might want to grab your softest blanket and watch the day wake up as you do. No need to move for a while, because you'll have everything you need nearby.

For example, I like to light a candle and be aware of how its scent wakes up as gradually as I do. But if I had to dig that candle out from somewhere, it might not feel worth it to me.

By the way, your bed can be a cozy wake-up spot, too. Just place what you will need on your night stand.

Whatever spot you choose, make it feel like a sanctuary. Keep your comfort tools within easy reach - your favorite mug or candle, a throw to wrap up in.

Maybe a crystal or two, or an essential oil body spray? Your journal and fave pen?

Morning Rituals that Feel
Like Coming Home

Though you want to choose whatever will feel most comforting, here are some ideas to consider as you think about what will happen in your morning ritual...

(1) A Cup of Warmth - feeling the shape and warmth of the cup you're holding as you sip your tea or coffee. And if you want delight, add yummy creamers or whatever makes it irresistible.

(2) Connecting to Inner Wisdom - try this: place your hand on your heart and ask yourself, what do I need today?

You also can breathe into the space around you and connect to your higher self that way.

When you connect through the heart, you can trust the guidance or wisdom that comes. It may not always come in words, though, and your understanding of it might unfold along with your day.

(3) Add the Magic - light a candle and watch its flame. Draw a tarot or oracle card to enhance your guidance. Write a line or two in your journal.

When Mornings Feel Heavy

Sometimes, you just won't feel like starting the day. Especially if you're not a morning person.

But there also may be a sense of heaviness, if you're going through something difficult right now. At times like that, it might seem like every part of your ritual is just too much.

I have a chronic illness. And on the day I wrote this post, I just couldn't dance.

You see, I got this idea from Julie Jordan-Scott to dance for a few minutes when I'm first waking up. The first day I boogied to Boogie Shoes, by KC & The Sunshine Band. On day two, my body said no.

When that happens to you, and for whatever reason, you know it's just not going to happen that day, don't push or force yourself. Instead, surrender, and be kind.

Take several deep breaths and ask yourself, given what's going on, how you want to feel and how best to take care of yourself. Make that your ritual, if and when you can.

As they say, it's okay to not be okay.

Creating a Sustainable
Morning Routine

In order for your morning ritual to be sustainable...

(1) It needs to be simple and easy to do

(2) It can't be done out of obligation.

(3) It should have your personal stamp all over it and contain #allthethings you love.

With all of that in place, you'll have created a daily practice for coming home to yourself.

Do you have a daily morning ritual yet? One that you love?

See you next time!

Love, Jeanine

My morning ritual starts with reading a daily devotional usually with a cup of hot chai tea. Weather permit I like to do this outside in my quiet corner but lately because of the super cold snap, I opt to cozy up on the couch with Snowball by my side.

Sounds heavenly! (See what I did there?) But yes, that sounds so cozy, and I'm glad you have those moments of self-care. *wonders where her chai tea got to*

Love the kindness and grace with which you wrote about your morning rituals!
I recently saw the suggestion of gently putting your hand on the floor before getting out of bed, giving thanks to mama earth!
I also have something warm to drink, and go outside and sing a morning prayer and the blessing - in Cherokee and Japanese (the second comes from Reiki!) It's cold right now - so I'm starting inside for those!
I may do self Reiki before getting out of bed.
Movement is usually Qigong or Breema (from the Middle East) or a walk ...

Ooh, Nadya, I love the idea of touching the earth before you get out of bed!! I want to try that, myself. It's so neat you have a morning ritual that includes movement.
