Okay, if you've been reading along, it might seem like I am driving the self-care point home.

Still, ask yourself, how good am I at taking care of myself, especially emotionally? Let's find out if the time has come to begin your self-care era.

10 Signs it's Time for
Your Self-Care Era

(1) You have spent so much time focusing on responsibilities, obligations, and other people’s needs that your own well-being has taken a backseat.

(2) You often go through your days without checking in with yourself. You do what needs to be done, but you rarely stop to ask what you need.

When you do have free time, it's hard to figure out what to do with it because you're so disconnected from your own wants and needs.

(3) Your to-do list is starting to feel like a never-ending list of things you have to do rather than things you want to do. Even some of the things you used to enjoy now feel like obligations.

(4) You wake up feeling exhausted even before the day begins.

(5) You've told yourself you're going to start making yourself a priority, but there never seems to be enough time, and life gets in the way.

(6) It often feels like you are living your day in survival mode and you're starting to fantasize about running away where no one can find you. :)

(7) Part of the problem is that you worry about what others will think, and that makes it hard to say no.

(8) You feel depleted at the end of each day but you don't want the day to end because you're just going to have to do it all again tomorrow, once you wake up.

(9) You rely on caffeine to keep going and pretend that all is well, but really it's not.

(10) You buy things that are meant to be used for self-care but they are gathering dust because you never get around to using them.

Easy Scoring

Give yourself 10 points for each yes answer. The higher your score, the more critical it is that you make a huge shift in the direction of emotional self-care.

Tell me how you did in the comments. :)

See you tomorrow!

Love, Jeanine

I'm 1,2,3,4,6,8. Don't think about self care but I probable should, don't rely on caffeine or worry about what others think and I don't buy self care things. Maybe I need to reassess things.

Well, you certainly deserve to be really good to yourself, Martha! And when we are vulnerable - grief, or other kinds of stress, etc., we need to make sure we look after ourselves, so we don't get sick or fatigued or lose our capacity for joy. So I'd encourage it!

2,3,5,8, 9 - so I am a 5!

I like to think #9 - i really like the taste of coffee and I can drink it all day and all night without it keeping me awake.

Thanks for sharing, Jeanine! Are you going to compile and post your scientific findings to see how we compare? (I guess comparing agaisnt other is not a good way to start my self-care routine! Forget I asked!)

I agree, Paul. Comparisons are stressful! But how cool that you can drink coffee all day and it won't keep you up at night. Wish I could do that with tea.

1 through 6 are biggies for me, with #6 a huge one. Especially since we closed my husband's business at the end of December and spent all of January emptying the storefront, I've felt like I've been running on empty.

As a health coach, I know in my head how important self-care is and have even blogged about it, and spoken to clients about it, but when it comes to yourself, sometimes you just need to be reminded. Thanks, Jeanine, for the reminder.

You're so right, Mary! And I'm really encouraging myself, too, with these self-care posts. You're welcome.

It's mostly number 1 for me. I don't see that changing because I'm that kind of person. When I am physically unable, I do focus on just myself.

Hi, Lily! Well, it's always good to know where you stand, what you value, and what is not up for negotiation. I do want to point out, though, that if being physically unwell is the only way you allow yourself self-care, you may find yourself ill more frequently than you'd expect.

I'm happy to say that - compared to a few years ago - I scored lower. You just inspired me to create a "wanna do" list 😎
Coffee is a reason to get up easier, not because I have withdrawal symptoms, but because I look forward to a warm, fragrant good morning greeting!

I can see how that would be worth it. And good for you! That's awesome.

I think I'm getting better. Certainly there are times of the year when I would score at least an 8. Right now I'm at a 5.
